A global finite element analysis is increasingly important in the design and approval process because it provides the proof of the strength of the vessel to a high degree of accuracy. C-Job has developed a workflow to do this in a cost-effective way.
What is Global FEA?
Global FEA conducts simulations on specialized software to show engineers the weak spots and areas of high stress in a design. The strength evaluation through the means of a Global FEA brings more precise results and therefore leaves room for a lighter and more optimized structure. It provides a lot of information to perform follow-up calculations like local models, deflection checks, and grounding strength.
Applied in an early design stage such as concept design, Global FEA will mitigate risks which would be normally only be identified in the basic design stage. Because of the high degree of automation involved in the workflow, it is easy to apply computer aided optimization to the analysis.
Why is Global FEA necessary?
Ships become more complex due to discontinuities in their structure, such as large openings in the shell or deck structure, limited transverse bulkhead structures over the vessel length and partially effective superstructures. Because of discontinuities like these, a Global Finite Element Analysis (Global FEA) is required.
Benefits of Global FEA
Global FEA in ship design
Early Global FEA results are instrumental in guiding the design process as assumptions are minimized and there will be no need for re-evaluation in the next design phase. The analysis is carried with a single source data mode, reducing risk for inconsistencies. After completing Global FEA, the processes of creating local models, sub-modelling, and follow-up analysis are all made smoother and faster. At C-Job, all skills are present under one roof. Design consequences can be dealt with by a single point of contact.
How C-Job uses Global FEA
C-Job has proven and extensive experience in Global FEA. We have developed reliable in-house tools to complete the analysis efficiently for clients. These tools allow us to automate the modeling, load cases and reporting, as well as empowering C-Job to tackle assessments such as buckling and fatigue further down the line in the design process.
