Building Supervision: Part of C-Job’s On-Site Support Services

latest news

C-Job offers two main types of on-site assistance. The first is providing supplementary engineering and naval architectural support to shipyards needing a (mostly temporary) boost in engineering capacity. The company’s work at Padmos Shipyard outlined in the previous Newsflash, is a recent example of this so-called Project Assistance. The second type of on-site assistance is Building Supervision: the direct, hands-on support of vessel construction, site management and superintendence operations.

“We work as the eyes and ears of our clients,” says Project Manager Hans Stoit. “This focuses more on the construction process itself. Therefore, it includes support with planning and budget protection in addition to supervision of the quality and quantity of delivered materials.”

The benefits of this are numerous, as highlighted below:

  • Reduced costs due to direct action,
  • Improved quality due to fewer flaws
  • Close contact with engineers means that modifications can be executed directly
  • Flexible service with additional engineering expertise if required
  • Quick delivery times due to short lines of communication and
  • Qualified, NOGEPA-certified personnel ready for offshore activities.

Clients can call on C-Job’s Building Supervision team to support new build projects and work such as modifications, lifetime extensions and repairs to existing vessels, both on- or offshore. “Feasibility studies are, of course, especially important when working on existing vessels. In these cases we visit the vessel in question to perform a situational investigation. This makes the engineering as efficient as possible.”

Saving costs by efficient engineering

“The way we work is to act as if we were the client. We protect their assets and keep an eye on the bigger picture; all with a no-nonsense attitude,” says Hans. “And don’t forget we have a lot of knowledge due to our multidisciplinary team with various backgrounds.”

This work strategy is combined with the short lines of communication that underpin C-Job’s way of doing business. It creates a situation where direct action can be taken if and when it is required to ensure the process runs smoothly. “I have a fair amount of engineering knowledge,” he adds modestly. “This is suitable for most on the spot decisions. But I am of course supported by my colleagues back in our offices for more detailed questions about, for example, stability or construction calculations.”

Looking towards the total cost of ownership for a vessel, it is clear what C-Job contributes to the process of building a ship. “Everything that can be done in the engineering phase will save ten times the costs in production. This in turn will save 100 times the costs for future repairs and modifications.”

All-round skills

Whether small (carried out in weeks) or large (more long-term), C-Job Building Supervision team links the company’s extensive in-house theoretical knowledge with practical experience of people like Hans. He has more than 15 years of project management experience in the steel, construction and maritime sectors.

“To do this job you have to be an all-rounder, and this is what I like best about this job,” he says. “It’s the unpredictability of the work that is exciting and what gets the adrenaline flowing. It’s my role as site manager to turn the unpredictable into the predictable – to unburden the client by taking care of all the issues that need to be taken care of.”
