At C-Job we make use of a risk-based design philosophy as a part of our commitment to supporting the transition of the shipping sector to more sustainable fuels. Prescriptive, rules-based systems created by Classification societies currently dominate the industry, setting the standard for how vessels should be built in order to ensure certain levels of safety, based on historical risks. When safety is treated as prescriptive rule compliance, it can hinder design optimization. To read about the new approach we're using, check out the link in our bio.

In order to determine a ship's center of gravity, an inclining test needs to be performed. Recently, C-Job naval architect Nico van Nierop performed one of these tests for a client at their yard, and we wanted to give you a peek into that process. In order to perform an inclining test, the ship must be free to heel, only then can the engineer shift a series of weights across the deck in order to find the center of gravity of the vessel.

FEM Analysis is used in the ship design process to create simulations of the weak spots and areas of high stress in a design.

C-Job engineers and naval architects use FEM analysis in our in-house designed tools to complete the analysis quickly and reliably for clients. By delivering more precise results earlier on in the ship design process, engineers can avoid having to make revisions later on in the process. The finished products leave room for a lighter and more optimized structure on the vessels.

Cutter suction dredgers (CSD's) present a particularly complex challenge during the design process because of the large amount of mission equipment and multiple interfaces that are required onboard. Mechanical engineers' work entails understanding and integrating the dredge equipment, from the required power to the required tolerances of machined parts. They work on designs all the way from the concept to detail stages, cooperating with all departments and many suppliers to get their job done. Mechanical engineers need to take special care that all of the dredging equipment will fit onto the vessel, paying close attention to the connections and range of motion of and between the equipment.

It is an exciting and dynamic process to design a CSD. C-Job’s engineers have all the knowledge required to design a CSD in-house, eliminating risk and interactions with third parties.

This month we’d like to introduce you to C-Job Research & Development Engineer, Roy! Roy is 29 years old and comes from the Dutch province of Zeeland. Aside from his role as R&D Engineer at C-Job, Roy is currently completing his PhD with the support of C-Job.

On a normal work day, Roy starts off by checking his experiments which he’s run all night long. If the experiments are done, he starts up some new ones and if they’re not, he lets them run further while he checks his emails and attends meetings. The experiments he runs help him in writing algorithms and academic papers which he later publishes. Sometimes Roy works on commercial projects for a few weeks at a time in between his R&D tasks. So far, Roy’s favorite projects to work on at C-Job have been projects where his algorithms are put into use because its satisfying to see his work being put into action. For example, Roy’s algorithms were used on a ferry project where he analyzed operational data about how many passengers travel in the area, where he then proposed an ideal vessel size for the ferry based off of that data.

Roy’s favorite part about working at C-Job is the freedom, especially in the opportunity to obtain his PhD. When he’s not working, Roy has many hobbies. He likes bouldering, snowboarding, and kite surfing, something he’s done to raise money for De Hartstichting (The Heart Foundation) on behalf of C-Job in the past. One thing that can always make Roy’s day better is a bit of sunshine, or a visit to the beach.

Dredgers carry lots of heavy equipment in order for them to get their jobs done, making them a feat of engineering for C-Job's structural engineers.

For example, trailer suction hopper dredgers (TSHD's) have large openings in their decks and bottoms, influencing the strength of the vessels. Because of this, it can lead to stress concentrations in the frame of the vessel. For that reason, C-Job structural engineers ensure that they pay special attention to detail and ensure that the other sections of the vessel are strong and flexible enough to withstand those built-up stresses.

With plenty of heavy equipment and important crew aboard, structural engineers are essential to ensuring the durability of dredging vessels.

In addition to traditional project engineering, C-Job Naval Architects also provides on-site support.

C-Job naval architects and engineers can also be engaged for work on-site, this is one of the unique ways for C-Job to bring knowledge and experience to your team and to deliver services efficiently. Bridging the gap between C-Job and our clients, and the resulting close cooperation, is the reason why C-Job on-site services are so valuable. Recently, multiple C-Job engineers offered on-site engineering and design support to our clients. Gregory Rademaker, who worked on-site at @dehaasshipyards, says "Working on-site benefits clients in a very useful way. While we were working at De Haas, we could provide faster results and served as the communication between De Haas and C-Job."

When C-Job works on-site, we make ourselves easily available for face to face discussions and to work side by side with your team. Joep van Liere said of his time spent at @chemgas, "By working closely with Chemgas at their office, it enabled me to understand their needs and for us make direct use of each other’s expertise, which was important to get the job done. This process allowed for a smooth integration and collaboration to make sure that C-Job and Chemgas remain aligned."

C-Job on-site support is always here to assist you whether it be at your office, ship yard, or the vessel itself.

The use of ammonia as an alternative marine fuel is something that C-Job has researched thoroughly, and C-Job work student Daan van Beusekom continued this research by focusing on the topic during his recent graduation study. Daan found that the impact of ammonia on large ocean-going cargo vessels can be manageable through reviewing large bulk carriers. He concluded that using ammonia as a marine fuel is a great alternative, but will require ship owners and naval architects to properly reorganize the layout of the ship and provide a safe place for ammonia to be stored.

Work students and interns at C-Job are an integral part of our organization, providing fresh ideas and resources. Are you interested in taking part? Check out our internship opportunities on our website.

Introducing alternative fuels into the dredging sector may seem difficult, but it is certainly possible. At C-Job we've created multiple concept designs of dredgers which make use of methanol as a marine fuel.

Methanol is an easy switch for vessels which previously made use of traditional fuels like diesel, making it a good choice for dredgers. As long as personnel are properly trained, methanol is a safe and effective fuel to reduce carbon emissions. What do you think? Would you like to see more dredgers making use of alternative fuels?

The Kotug E-Pusher 1 was recently unveiled to the world.

On behalf of @shipyardpadmos and their client Kotug, C-Job Naval Architect Bas Crama spent the past year and a half working onsite at Padmos, and assisting Kotug and Padmos in designing the vessel. Together with the team at Padmos, Bas assisted the parties in developing the concept design and the engineering of the basic and detail designs of the vessel, as well as providing building support, project management at Padmos, and part of the commissioning of the vessel.

The innovative design is fully electric and zero-emission. The pusher tug was designed to transport barges of cocoa beans between the harbor in Amsterdam and @cargill 's factory in Zaandam. Interestingly, the hull of the vessel is made out of HDPE, a special type of plastic, and is the first of its kind. The installed battery container is modular and can easily be switched for a different energy source if necessary.

It was an honor to work on such an out of the box project!
