AB Initio – for Concordia Damen

Training students who are following a maritime education is vital to the industry. After a winning tender, C-Job supported Concordia Damen to deliver the initial design for a futuristic training and education vessel the AB Initio. The ship is now operated by STC Group, a dedicated maritime transport and logistics education provider.
About the project

Futuristic design and sustainable power

The AB Initio is both a state-of-the art instruction ship with accommodation for 30 people, and a great example of sustainable ship design. Built with recyclable materials, it has hybrid propulsion, since it partially generates energy using 200 m² of solar panels. The vessel is also future-fuel ready thanks to changeable generators, which can be easily adapted for a fuel cell or hydrogen when required.

C-Job began with a simple design for the AB Initio and then adapted it to make the ship look futuristic, innovative and recognizable – an important requirement of the tender. Our design approach also made the build more affordable by making the vessel relatively light, since it mainly transports people, and by creating a hull shape that cuts through the water. This avoided the need for a more complicated and expensive shallow ship design.

As well as training boatmasters, boatmen and boatwomen in practical and theoretical skills, the AB Initio will operate as a field lab. Companies will be able to test innovative maritime products and services on the vessel, in collaboration with students.

Anna Weber-van Bosse – for NIOZ

The Pelagia has been the Netherlands' flagship ocean-going research vessel for the past 30 years. When the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ) decided to replace her, the ambition was to build a larger, yet compact vessel, with increased capabilities and improved sustainability. C-Job provided the concept design for the new vessel, the Anna Weber-van Bosse – named after the renowned Dutch botanist and marine researcher.
