Orion – for DEME

The Orion is a floating DP3 offshore installation vessel designed to support offshore wind parks with mega foundations and turbines. The vessel, which was a first of its kind, is a sister ship to the Green Jade. It was delivered to DEME in 2022 and currently sails around the world to perform installations for offshore wind projects.
About the project

First purpose-built monohulled offshore installation vessel

C-Job developed the concept design of the Orion in in close collaboration with DEME, and delivered the basic design package of the vessel to COSCO shipyard in China where the vessel was built. We were also involved in the integration design of the major mission equipment.

A highlight of the Orion is the powerful, 5,000-tonne crane which is designed to handle the enormous turbines and foundations which are required for future offshore wind farms. With a total installed power of 44,180 kW and at 216.5 meters long, the Orion has a spacious, unobstructed deck and a deadweight that has been maximized so it can handle the heaviest monopiles, jackets and wind turbine components.

The Orion installed its first XXL monopile at Parkwind’s Arcadis Ost 1 offshore wind farm in Germany. It then completed monopile installation works on Ocean Winds’ Moray West offshore wind farm project in Scotland. Despite harsh winter conditions, the vessel swiftly installed 29 monopiles in approximately two months as part of a near 15 MW turbine foundation installation project. The Orion then proceeded to the US for offshore works at the Vineyard Wind 1 project in Massachusetts and the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project
